Tips for Taking Care of Yourself

As we have entered into the New Year and transitioned back into work, these are some questions to continue to ask yourself.

Are you eating right? Drinking enough water? Are you exercising and getting enough sleep?

It is common to find many nurses that do not properly care for themselves and their well-being. This is because we don't often understand the demands that the profession has on those that are in it.

Many times, nurses are faced with both physical and mental demands on their bodies working up to 12 hours or sometimes more per day. They also have innumerable responsibilities and duties in a single shift and may be faced with complex patient situations which may lead to a stressful work environment.

Signs of poor health in nurses include:

  • Impaired judgement and reflexes
  • Inability to perform physical duties
  • Sleepiness and ongoing yawns
  • Lack of focus
  • Weight gain / Weight Loss
  • Not looking forward to work

If you show signs of these symptoms, it's time for you to start taking care of yourself. Taking care of yourself builds resilience and allows you to provide your best care. By taking care of yourself, you are taking care of your patients.

Here are some ways you can take care of yourself

  1. Have some "you" time in order to achieve a healthy work-life balance - Pick up a hobby or indulge in things that you love to do whether it is exercising, photography, delving in music or the arts. It's entirely up to you. Do what makes YOU feel good.
  2. Delegate and utilise your team - Often nurses take on more than they can handle, you need to remember that the team around you are there to support you. You have the same passions and patient-care goals. Utilise this team by delegating to others including carers, nurses and other colleagues.
  3. Talk it out and look for ongoing inspiration - Talk with the leadership team to pinpoint solutions that can address your daily burdens in order to minimise them. Keep in contact with your social circle to ensure your life does not revolve around work. Continue to seek for inspirations and make time for fun.
  4. Meditate, rest and sleep - This stillness allows the mind and the body to rest and relax hence leading to clarity when making decisions, thinking and responding. Eat better and exercise to release endorphins that make you feel good!

Your wellbeing matters and is important! Take the time out for yourself. We hope these tips prove useful.
